A-Level Students Finding Work Abroad

Management - HR- V Capital - Financeassociate14 writes
Last year 130,000 hopeful students failed to secure a university place through clearing and with the figure expected to rise to 170,000 this year, more young people due to receive their A-level results today are considering an alternative way to spend the coming year and thinking about teaching English abroad.

Dingwall, Ross-Shire, UK, August 19, 2010 (PRESSbooth.ORG) -- Last year 130,000 hopeful students failed to secure a university place through clearing and with the figure expected to rise to 170,000 this year, more young people due to receive their A-level results today are considering an alternative way to spend the coming year and thinking about teaching English abroad.

Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, Bristol, Birmingham, Reading, St Andrews and Warwick have stated that all courses are full and no clearing places will be offered. Some Scottish institutes, such as Aberdeen University, which has typically offered clearing places in the past, have stated that they too are full this year.

2010 has been a difficult year for hopeful students and, as a result, many are hoping to take a year out with the aim of re-applying again in 2011. It is important to make the most of a year out and do something which will help to further improve an application. Working abroad shows maturity and independence and also improves presentation and communication skills – all traits admission officers look for when looking at university applications.

Joe Hallwood, co-founder of TEFL England, believes that Teaching English as a Foreign Language is the ideal way for students who are looking to re-apply for a place in 2011 to spend their year.

“At this time of year we’re inundated with calls from A-level students looking to defer their university application in order to gain skills and experience abroad. It’s an appealing option because working abroad definitely makes an application more competitive and it’s also a great way to spend a year.”

The demand for English teachers has never been higher and it presents an ideal opportunity for English speakers to find paid work. First-time teachers abroad can expect to earn anything up to £1300 a month and, importantly for gap-year students, the skills learnt  are invaluable.

The last few years have proved difficult for those hoping to secure a place at university but for those who miss out on a place this year Teaching English as a Foreign Language is a smart way to make an application more competitive as well as an amazing way to spend a year.
