Spain to Extend Wireless Railway Communications

Wi-Fi - WiMAX - Wireless
Nokia Siemens Networks boosts traffic safety and operational efficiency for a new railway link from Madrid to Valencia and Albacete

Madrid, Spain & Espoo, Finland, July 7, 2008 (PRESSbooth.ORG) -- Nokia Siemens Networks will provide, operate and maintain a complete railway mobile communications solution for Spain's rail administration ADIF to cover some 450 kilometers of the newly constructed high-speed tracks linking Madrid with the cities of Valencia and Albacete.

The project, which ensures passenger safety and railway traffic efficiency, while reducing operational costs, also extends Nokia Siemens Networks´ market leadership in railway communications in Spain as it remains the sole high-quality mobile communications supplier for ADIF high-speed lines designed for trains known as AVE.

"The experience jointly gathered by ADIF and Nokia Siemens Networks, who share the same objectives of deploying the projects in the required time and maintaining the network in perfect condition, is what allows us to offer excellent transportation to passengers with a very high level of safety and efficiency required of such type of installations," said Mariano Moyano, Installations Executive Director at ADIF.

The current project, which is to be completed within 30 months, covers about 450 kilometers of the tracks from Torrejón de Velasco-Motilla to Valencia and Albacete. The system will provide communications for trains running at up to 350 km/h. The single streamlined digital radio system for railway communications, or GSM-R, carries signaling and operational information directly to the driver, enabling higher speeds and greater traffic density with improved safety.

"We are proud to support ADIF's ambitious project to build Europe's largest high-speed train network that would link not only all Spain, but also provide fast international connections with our railway communications solution," said Agustin Menchen in charge of Nokia Siemens Networks business with Railways in Spain.

Nokia Siemens Networks has been working in partnership with ADIF, implementing GSM-R on the remaining 1,700 km that make up the high-speed railway network in Spain since 2003, when it brought the first high-speed GSM-R application online in Spain.

Under the current contract, Nokia Siemens Networks will supply a complete GSM-R radio solution with network management as well as services including network implementation to allow seamless and timely launch and network design to ensure optimum network investment, coverage and capacity. Nokia Siemens Networks will operate the network on behalf of ADIF and provide network maintenance with round-the-clock monitoring, remote or on-site troubleshooting as well as user administration.

Nokia Siemens Networks is one of the inventors of the GSM-R technology, with Siemens researching and creating the GSM-R standard in the early 1990s. The world's earliest three GSM-R trial networks and the first commercial network have been supplied by Nokia Siemens Networks. To date, the company has deployed GSM-R networks in 15 (countries serving some 50.000 km of railways, making it the world's No. 1 GSM-R vendor in both the number of commercial networks and the length of operated GSM-R lines.
