Clearwater, FL, USA, February 26, 2010 (PRESSbooth.ORG) -- The number of people using social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook has soared in the last year. The Nielsen Company reports that in 2009 consumers were spending 82 percent more time on social networking sites compared to 2008. Companies are aware of this trend and are scrambling to include social media in their marketing mix. Yet a study out this month from dotCommerce shows that 70 percent of retailers in the UK with a social media presence are not promoting it on their websites.
Social Follow, a service that provides links to your social presence in one button, analyzed the Fortune 100 websites to see if this finding holds true across all sectors in the US, and indeed it does. While more than half of the Fortune 100 has a presence on Twitter and Facebook only 26 percent of those firms display connecting buttons to their social profiles, pages and feeds on their homepage or their newsroom.
Aware of the need to provide companies with an easy and elegant solution to link to a variety of social accounts, SocialFollow.com launched their free tool in April 2009. The rapid increase of click throughs on the button show that not only are people using social media more, there is also an increase in people wanting to connect with companies in the social space. Websites that have had the Social Follow button on their site for six months have seen, on average, a 633 percent increase in people clicking through to their social accounts.
An important factor in increasing traffic to corporate social accounts is where the button is placed on the website. "We discovered that the sites that have far and away (4X) the best results placed the Social Follow button at the top right of their website, next to the search box," said Rafferty Pendery, creator of Social Follow. Social Follow is planning an upgrade to the service in the next few months that will provide each user with an analytics interface. Account holders will be able to log in and see the impressions and clicks on their buttons in real-time. The dashboard will provide information such as the number of people that clicked on a particular profile and, since they can drag and drop the order of the social profiles in their list, they will also be able to see how the order affects the clicks to their different profiles.
