Spokane Landscaping Company will build a water feature in memory of Sonora Dodd.
Airway Heights, WA, USA, April 7, 2010 (PRESSbooth.ORG) -- Spokane landscaping company Cascading Creations announced that it had committed to build a water feature as a memorial to Sonora Dodd, the founder of Father’s Day. Cascading Creations will build the water feature in Fairmount Memorial Gardens.
Born in Arkansas in 1882, Sonora Smart Dodd’s family eventually settled in Spokane. Dodd greatly respected her father, William Smart. A widower upon the birth of his sixth child, Ms. Dodd and her father raised her siblings together. When she heard that Mother’s Day had been officially recognized, she campaigned for a similar day to honor fathers. She suggested June 5th – William Smart’s birthday – but the Spokane Ministerial Alliance she was a member of opted for the third week in June instead. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane on June 19th, 1910. In 1966, Father’s Day would become a nationally recognized observance.
