DTAC Goes Green with Network Upgrade

Telecommunication - VOIP - Satellite
Thai telecoms group can make significant cost savings with energy-efficient network solution from Nokia Siemens Networks.

Bangkok, Thailand, June 19, 2008 (PRESSbooth.ORG) -- DTAC, one of Thailand's leading telecoms service providers, has taken huge steps towards building a highly efficient and environmentally sustainable mobile network, as it received the first of 1,500 Flexi EDGE base stations from Nokia Siemens Networks.

The roll out is a further endorsement of Nokia Siemens Networks' position of leadership in environmentally-friendly network solutions. Its market-leading solutions can generate energy savings of up to 70 percent, while maintaining DTAC's advantage in delivering high data rates to its customers.

Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi Base Station technology enables operators to minimize the number of base station sites and the need for air conditioning at the sites. Moreover, the solution allows operators to deploy software features to optimize the use of radio access for wireless communications. All these benefits not only result in a more environmentally friendly network operation, but also lower operating and capital costs for operators.

Said Rolf Marthinusen, CTO, DTAC, "As a responsible corporation, we need to be conscious of the environment in which we operate and do our best in adopting green solutions, where possible. Nokia Siemens Networks solutions based on the Flexi base station let us reduce adverse effects on the environment, while providing a cost efficient high performing network."

Suwit Pruckwattananon, Head of DTAC Customer Team, Nokia Siemens Networks Thailand, added, "Operators are increasingly looking at us to help them improve overall efficiency in their business. Our Flexi Base Station technology provides several advantages in terms of the overall cost of operating the network and has accordingly met with tremendous response from our customers."

The telecommunications industry is striving to improve the energy efficiency of its latest-generation base stations. As the leader in wireless communication solutions that connect people and businesses in an environmentally sustainable way, Nokia Siemens Networks has made remarkable achievements in reducing energy consumption throughout its base station portfolio, achieving energy consumption levels of 800W and 500W respectively for typical GSM and WCDMA base stations. Going forward, Nokia Siemens Networks has set even more ambitious targets: to further reduce the energy consumption of its GSM and WCDMA base stations to 650W and 300W respectively by 2010.
